Hello there Presonus Community!
Since there are a lot of threads about common issues with Studio One (2 Artist) I checked literally everything I could find but still haven't found anything that has helped.
I followed all the instructions on the following sites:
(1) http://support.presonus.com/entries/203 .. Studio-One
(2) http://support.presonus.com/entries/119 .. -Windows-7
Using a StudioLive 16.4.2 and this is my setup:

To my problem:
Studio One does at some point stop functioning, meaning I can still scroll through the project, zoom-in, change settings etc., BUT the play- and record-button just stop working.
When I restart my PC it seems to work like a charm but only for a short amount of time.
Then again I recorded a 30-minute session with no problems.
I found out that after this 'crash', I can open files with Windows Media Player the file is not played. I can skip through the song, WMP is on 'play' but the song does not move on.
So it feels like the driver suddenly stops working but I can't predict at what time and why.
Additional information:
-I have reinstalled Universal Control
-Done a factory reset on my 16.4.2
-Windows updates are off
-Unistalled anti-virus-software
-Changed Firewire cable
-Reinstalled Studio One (deleted all Presonus and Studio One data in roaming folder and registry; still license information was kept, so wasn't able to completely reinstall)
-Wifi drivers are diasbled
-Using an Intel HD 4600 onboard grpahics card, settings set to 'performance'
-FW-ID on 16.4.2 is set to '0'
-16.4.2 is set standard audio device for Playback and Recording on Windows
-Changed to Win7 legacy driver
So this is all information I came up with that could be relevant. You are my last hope people, I'm on the border of going insane with this program

Why does my sound stop working when I open Studio One 3? Headphones output not working with my Audiobox 1818VSL; No sound from SoudioLive 32R either on Windows 10 Pro, output or headphones in UC or Studio One v4.5; Just started using Studio One, I'm not getting any output.

I'm interested in a solution to this post too. I have a similar problem. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what triggers the PLAY button to stop working. Once it stops working however, I have found if I go into the Audio Preferences like you show and 'toggle' my audio device to another source, then back, it usually starts working again..

Try to run latencymon, and see if there are any onboard problems.
Does the board function as a mixer? If yes, then I suspect that it is a firewire issue, which LM can help diagnose. It sounds to me that you are losing sync to the PC, so its something in the firewire chain. Cable, PCIE card, FW jack(s).
The board has 2 jacks on the back, did you try both with the same result?

Just a quick note - I am experiencing the same symptoms as Daniel and don't have anywhere near the hardware he's got. The only thing in common (other than the problem) is Studio One 2. I have Producer, but I expect both flavors use the same engine.

Then again, maybe 2 different issues are causing us both to 'lose our sync' to our PCs?

Okay, I think I've found the solution. My firewire card needs to be connected to the power supply unit of my pc. Never had a small PCIe card that needed additional power, so I just turned my head off while installing it..
At first, I ran Latencymon and noticed the wdf0100.sys driver had a constantly increasing DPC count. So I googled a bit and someone recommended checking the PCIe slots.
I rather randomely read through the manual of my firewire card and there it is: 'Connect an SP4 power connector from the computer [..] on the adapter card.'
Well there you go. Program runs stable till now, even in the background.

Okay, would have been too easy, if the problem was solved..
Happened again today, while recording.
Can too high input levels cause dropouts?
I noticed on the system page it says 'Sampling Rate: FireWire', is this normal?
The DPC count on the mentioned driver above still keeps getting higher, when I check Latencymon. Anyone else having this?
is a decent graphics card recommended when running studio one?
Just really trying to check everything that could cause the issue. So frustrating when people come around to record, and things just don't work

INSTALACIÓN:

  • Desinstalamos versiones anteriores (recomendable limpiar registro con programas como CCleaner)
  • Ejecutamos el instalador para nuestra versión (32bit o 64bit)
  • Tendremos que “Desactivar SmartScreen” de Windows y el antivirus
  • Iniciamos el programa, cerramos la ventana de login, seleccionamos “autorización offline”
